The Stingray was designed by Thomas Pedersen in 2002 as a modern interpretation of the classic rocking chair. The generous shape of the shell offers a variety of sitting positions. The shell is available in either plastic or wood, with upholstery options over the wood version.
Pedersen is often inspired by organic shapes found in nature, and found the flowing shape of the stingray fish the perfect muse for the shape and name, Stingray. The story behind Stingray begins In 2002, when Thomas Pedersen was completing his final project to qualify as an architect. He selected a rather untraditional item – a rocking chair in fibreglass and steel. Although the Aarhus School of Architecture has an extremely well-equipped timber ...workshop, his choice of materials posed problems as it has no facilities for his chosen materials.
FREDERICIA’s collaboration with Thomas Pedersen began at the Copenhagen Furniture Fair in 2002. He presented Stingray and Frederica Furniture was very enthusiastic about it from the start. Fredericia Furniture was not the only ones either, as the prototype was displayed in our showroom after the fair, and customers were already interested in buying the chair.
Pedersen's style is rather atypical of the Danish tradition, yet what they do have in common is simplicity. In his designs he combines organic lines with innovative ideas and fluid details.
For Pedersen, much of the fascination of furniture design lies in how 1:1 models can be constructed. This means that you can try out the furniture for yourself and see whether the structure is sound and If the item is fit for the intended purpose. Among his role models are Charles and Ray Eames for their work in creating designs that match the human body.
Materials
Today Stingray is available with a shell of plastic or veneer. The veneer version is moulded in the world’s largest 3D frame and is available in brown Makassar, grey Makassar, oak, and walnut or as black-lacquered and is delivered with a chrome frame. The plastic version is in black or white with chrome, monochrome or stainless steel frame. The stainless steel frame makes it possible to place Stingray outdoors. Stingray is also available with an upholstered seat, or fully upholstered in fabric or leather.
